To have witnessed some beautiful events, but more than that to have recorded the fleeting experience and paramount to even this to be afforded the ability and desire to share them with you.

Ricky Runs Away


You know those sappy seventies movie scenes when the somethingorotherball player has a touching moment and starts to cry, well music does that to me.

Ricky suffered a stroke while playing a regular Monday night gig in Royal Oak, MI. It was the begining of a dramatic transistion in a lot of lives. Ricky's stroke was followed by bassit Trent Mitchell suffering a stroke. That's two members of JazzHead out of the game for a while.

It had only been a few years since the Christmas Party where I first heard them causing sexy 19 year old girls to dance into sweaty frenzies and months since the I had met Jason, Jeremy, Rick, John and John, but after that Rick made me a fast friend.

The night Rick was injured by the stroke, was one of the few nights I had not been in the audience. When I got the news, I cried. They say, he played his natural black ass off.

Years go by and all kinds of life happens, Rick gets married and moves to Tomah, Wisconsin, to be with his wife, a wonderful doctor at the VA hospital there.

It's been years since I've heard him play.

This night, I'm fighting to keep my tear filled eyes open, focused on the subject in reality and not the little husky black kid wearing a well greased and brushed Covatis with a part on the side, matching Grranimals, last years school clothes and new Stride-Rites. Running through a summer meadow, with wooden spoons in his hands, right up to the white stripe of a two lane highway in the middle of Whereareallthecars-n-blackpeopleland, looking both ways and carefully counting measured steps to a cresent of old pots and pans in the dirt at the foot of gray wooden stairs.

Rick gets bored and misses playing with his friends

So this night he sneaks wearing a dredlock wig and king sized grin, slips into the trap and runs away.

I haven't cried happy tears like that since watching Mambo dance.

I want all of my friends to meet Ricky or at least see him play.


This video is of Officer Rick Hudson's last public performance. A few weeks later, Ricky passed on to the next level.
